The Weymouth Civic
Society, a member of the Central Council of Civic Societies, and of the
Civic Trust is established for the public benefit:-
- to improve and develop public amenities and foster
good planning, while protecting the special character of Weymouth and
Portland.
- to conserve our historic heritage and safeguard
buildings of historic or architectural value.
- to conserve natural beauties.
- to stimulate interest in the history of Weymouth and
Portland and their environs and encourage a sense of citizenship.
The area of interest of the Society is that bound by the
boundaries of the Borough of Weymouth and Portland and the Parishes of
Bincombe, Buckland Ripers, Chickerell, Fleet and Langton Herring.
Four local societies are affiliated:-
The Upwey Society
West Weymouth Conservation Society
Sutton Poyntz Society
Wyke Regis Protection Society
In addition to its work in protecting the local
environment the Society owns and opens to the public the Tudor Merchant's
house in Trinity Street and operates the Nothe Fort, under licence from
Weymouth and Portland Borough Council.
The Society also makes annual awards for the best
contribution to the built environment in The Borough of Weymouth and
Portland. |
